Life Over Time Requires Adjustment and Flexibility When it comes to our identity we best realize we are more than our roles in life (parent, grandparent,spouse, employer, employee, athlete, homeowner.) Personal identity is how growth, change and life experiences transform one’s self. When the roles come to an end, we have to adapt our sense of self accordingly. For example, many retired people find ways to avoid defining themselves as unemployed. Instead, they create a new identity, like student, community leader, church elder, aspiring artist or entrepreneur. Our roles, like our identity, keep evolving.
