Life Sketch of late Prof. Golam Ali Fakir Muhammed Golam Ali Fakir was born in 1941 in the respectable ‘Fakir Family’ of Fakirhat Upazila, Bagerhat. He Passed Bachelor of Agriculture securing fourth position and stood First Class First in Master’s of Agriculture (Plant Pathology) respectively in 1961 and 1963 from Dhaka University. He obtained Ph.D degree in Plant Pathology from North Carolina State University, U.S.A in 1969.He received ‘Sigma Si’, the highest academic award for his outstanding performance in Ph.D. programme. He obtained his Post Doctorate from Danish Government Institute of Seed Pathology,Copenhagen,Denmarkin1976. He joined the Division of Plant Pathology, Pakistan Central Jute Research Institute (now BJRI), Dhaka as Research Assistant in 1962. Later, he joined Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) as Lecturer in Plant Pathology in 1964. He was appointed as Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor), Associate Professor and Professor in the Dept. of Plant Pathology in 1969, 1973 and 1982, respectively. Prof. Fakir served BAU in various capacities like Head, Dept. of Plant Pathology, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Member, BAU Syndicate, Provost Shahid Shamsul Haque Hall, Member BAURES, Finance Committee and Planning & Development Committee, BAU and Founder Director, Seed Pathology Centre. Prof. Fakir served as Vice Chancellor,KhulnaUniversity(1993-1997). He worked as Asian Representative Member of the Advisory Board, Danish Seed Health Centre, Copenhagen, Denmark (2004-06). Prof. Fakir was the founder Director BAU- DANIDA Seed Pathology Centre at BAU. He worked as Consultant in international organization like DANIDA, DFID, FAO, GTZ & IRRI. He retired from BAU in 2006. Prof. Fakir has 220 publications including about 100 journal articles and more than 20 books, bulletins, manual & monographs. He supervised the Ph. D. programs of 7(seven) Ph. D. and 50 MS students as major supervisor. He was the founder General Secretary of the Bangladesh Phytopathological Society. He has served as President / Secretary / Member in 15 different national /international scientific societies or Professional Organizations. Prof. Fakir took active part in the Liberation War of 1971. Prof. Fakir was awarded President’s medal (1992) and National Agricultural Gold Medal Award (2004) for his glorious contributions in Agricultural research and Kanthashwar gold medal award for significant contribution in the field of education. Prof. Fakir traveled USA,Canada,Denmark,Germany, Italy, Sweden, India,Pakistan,Iran,Saudi Arabia,Malta,China,Thailand and th ePhilippines for obtaining higher education and participating in seminars, conferences, symposia and workshops. He was married to Choudhury Rasheda Begum in 1972. They were blessed with two daughters and a son. The eldest daughter Dr. Zeba Ali is a Clinical Bio-chemist and completed her M.D. The youngest daughter Nazmoon Nahar Tonu, Asst. Professor of Plant Pathology atSher-e-Bangla Agricultural University is now doing her Ph.D. in Molecular Plant Pathology at Niigata University,Japan. Their only son, Nafee-ul Alam, is studying Biotechnology (Hons) in Malaysia. At the time of his death, Prof. Fakir was working as Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University, Dhaka. He was the Senate member of Khulna University and member of the Advisory Committee of BAU- DANIDA seed Pathology centre. He was working as the Consultant of Supreme Seed Co. Ltd.Dhaka.
