Life changing rural scholarship awarded Georgia Klemm has has been awarded a three year scholarship from the Menzies Foundation to further her education at university. Three Year 12 Rainbow Secondary School students applied for the scholarship with Georgia the inaugural recipient. Georgia will be the first person in her family to seek tertiary education. She hopes to undertake a Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine and eventually research chronic diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. “I feel very strongly about helping people through these ordeals as my family life has been affected greatly by these illnesses,” she said. Georgia was awarded the scholarship at a ceremony held at the College with Acting Principal Steve Leach welcoming the guests and adding, “What a difference a scholarship like this can make in a rural setting.” Dignitaries Mayor Rob Gersch, Cr Ron Lowe, Cr Ron Ismay and CEO Tony Doyle from the Hindmarsh Shire, along with Fielding Foundation Director, Marcus Fielding attended the occasion. Mayor Gersch thanked the representatives of the two foundations and continued by saying how proud he was of the students and the three schools in the Hindmarsh Shire. “This will also further our understanding of Sir Robert Menzies and what he did as Prime Minister,” he said. Sarah Hardy, Menzies Foundation Chief Executive presented the scholarship to Georgia. Georgia then thanked both organisations and Mrs Bellinger, retiring Rainbow College Principal, saying “Mrs Bellinger kept an eye on me and made sure my application went in on time. It has cemented my plans for the future.” Georgia plans on studying at the University of South Australia. She was born and bred in Rainbow and her parents Kathy and David (Onions) Klemm said, “She’s fantastic and works so hard – she deserves this. For six years she’s been keen on helping people and eventually would like to develop cures for things like cancer and Alzheimer’s,” she said.
