Life is brief and often chaotic, and our lives in this world are numbered in hours, months and years. The realization that life is not infinite has inspired numerous individuals and groups to search for the Fountain of Life on one hand and a elixir/medicine that will lengthen the days of our lives on the other hand. While the length of an individual’s life is without doubt important, there are other ways to expand our experiences while we live in the here and now. A number of these paths are spiritual in nature. In the Book of Proverbs we are taught that “knowing Me (God) will add to your days and expand the years of your life” (Proverbs 9:11). The message from the author of Proverbs (traditionally attributed to Solomon) was geared towards both his and future generations, in the hope that one would see their relationship with God as the anchor to their contentment in life. On the other hand the Deuteronomist believed that a person’s ability to live and not just exist was based upon his/her relationship with God. This we know from the verse “And you who cleave to the Lord your God are all alive today” (Deuteronomy 4:4). In essence the Deuteronomist was intimately tying together man and God, with the individual’s life being the connector between the two. In the end both of these sources are attempting to teach us a very important lesson that we all too often ignore in todays world, that being it is not the elixir of life that is worth chasing after, rather it is living with the spirituality of God in our hearts that gives us life in the here and now. I hope and pray that we will all find the strength to embrace life and enjoy the many blessings that it affords us.
