Life is easier on the beautiful.... What is it about pretty - TopicsExpress

Life is easier on the beautiful.... What is it about pretty faces that make men go gaga and women struggle and sometimes face pain (like my weave is so tight at the edges but I will endure) to attain. It is all connected, isn’t it? I mean looking pretty and admiration from men. I served in a village in the east alongside 2 other corpers. They were both Muslims; a man (an Islamic scholar we all called Imam) and a woman (devout Yoruba Muslim). The lady was covered head to toe, only her eyes, nose and mouth was on display. The man, well he was an ‘Imam’ and devout I guess. One thing though, he had an eye for beauty. I remember once I made my hair and he saw and complimented and the other lady reprimanded him that he had broken his fast by complimenting me. This Imam used to eat at a particular restaurant almost every day. The other lady corper and I decided to eat there one day after CD. The food was unbelievably atrocious. It was rice and beans but for the life of me, I could barely swallow it. We struggled and the food won, we only could eat about a quarter of it. Immediately we saw Imam, we asked how he could go there every day. He laughed and told me sheepishly in Hausa (so that the other girl would not understand and scold him or sermonize.) “WALAHI YARINYAN TANA DA KYAU! Which translates to (Truthfully before God, the girl that serves the food, is beautiful). My jaw dropped. FOR REAL? Men are truly from mars. Eating nonsense every day, EVERY DAY fa! Because a pretty girl is serving it. By the way, Imam was married. Have you seen a beautiful girl stranded before? Before you say anything, I mean really beautiful, light skinned (before you start talking about Lupita black being beautiful, please spare me o. My hubby is light skinned, with each child we had, everyone first wanted to know if the baby was light skinned…white is beautiful, black is well… black, ask American police, they will tell you which they prefer.) So as I was saying, light skinned, wide spaced eyes with clear white eyeballs. Long luxurious hair (no iya bose hairline), aquiline nose and pink lower lip. Slender or curvy does not matter much but I will say a full chest and some ‘junk in the trunk’ would be ‘jara’. So now that I have described her, think back to the beauties you have known, how many do you see stranded, broke, without jobs, husbands or ‘prospects’? Beauty is important. It opens doors and people just want to associate with beautiful people. It is easier to scold an unpretty child than a good looking one. People respond to beauty. The one that annoys me is when they are beautiful and nice. Kai! You have no reason to beef them again. My best friend in secondary school was (still is) beautiful (and nice). All the guys were my friends just because they thought as per gate keeper, I could help them out. I never knew I was not ugly till we parted ways into university because I was always under the shadow of her looks. (Forgive me dearest for the mention). On a serious note, don’t judge Renee Zellweger. Do not judge Dencia. Do not judge us for going through all that we do to look beautiful. If women bleach, fix implants, get liposuction done, sit down for hours braiding hair, sewing synthetic or Brazilian or goat hair, fixing nails, caking their faces, tottering on high heels, pulling down short ever riding skirts, pad their chests and bums, BIKO DON’T JUDGE US. If you see how the world responds to beauty (and the world includes you), you will not blame us. Some men will disturb everyone about ‘natural’ beauty and then they go ahead and adjust their car mirrors to ogle at the ‘unnatural’ beauties. It was like that when I was in NCCF and refused to stop wearing trousers (that would have been pretense). Openly, everyone disapproved, but secretly, my toasters ‘Boku’ (make I no mention names, dey all don marry by now.) My neighbor would playfully sneer at me, “It is because you are pretty that you refuse to take make up seriously, if you were considered wor wor, nobody will tell you to buy eye pencil. While I know there is some point to what she was saying, it was lost on me because all I could think was that “she thinks I am pretty.” Sigh!!
