Life is interesting you know. The things you dont appreciate when you are younger, you grow up and realize it was all for your good. For most of you who dont know, I am my mothers only child BUT she clearly didnt treat me as such. She gave me what you might call the tough love training and there were times I was mad at her. Why cant I do this and why cant I have that and so many other instances I felt she should have given me preferential treatment but she didnt. She will always remind me that my life is between me and my God and without Him I will be nothing. She constantly reminded me that the world doesnt owe me crap but it has given me all kinds of resources and if I want a better life for myself, I will have to create that life -- get an education, be smart, work hard, be kind, grab the right opportunities, be self-reliant, be relentless in your pursuit for higher heights, dont ever settle for mediocrity, give back and help others when you can, and above all place God first. Even in college, she still had a say in everything I did. From how I dressed to who I talked to. I remember a time when someone had called her to tell her she saw me in town and my blouse was too exposing. My mom called me to come back home and had me change my clothes telling me I didnt look like a lady. She and my crazy Auntie Evelyn - that one was worse than my mom. Those Fanti women dont play. Geez! Its her house and her rules and if shes paying your bills, then you have no choice. Yes, I wrote all these down in my very old diary as these became my core principles in life. Today, I love her more and more for everything she said and pumped into my head. Shes my best friend and confidante and I wish young people of today will heed more to their parents advice. Guess what, 99.9% of the time, they are right!
