Life isnt fair, it just is what it is. So i tell my kids anyways when they complain about what they perceive is some sort of injustice in the Appleton household. They have no interest in hearing it, but i say it anyway, i guess i just cannot resist. So, i have been training hard and consistently all summer and fall for my one race that i can squeeze into my calendar, the Naperville half marathon( a brand new race through many scenic areas i am told). I am just a few weeks out and have a very tough and difficult case of shin splints on my left leg. After some treatment and advice it appears unlikely and unwise for me to attempt to run that race. There is no crying in running and it does not seem too fair, but hey it is what it is. I trained strategically(2 rest days per week, 1 swim day), i did stretching religously, i ate good, slept good-it just happened. This is not my first rodeo and many of my running mates can relate to injuries curtailing races, it is a mental hurdle one has to push through. I do not feel bad for me(well, maybe a little bit as i see the fitness level slipping away), but i feel bad for my nephew Tommy a young high school runner who has a shin stress fracture as his season heads into the most important races of the year. Now that is rough, but knowing Tommy he will do his rehab and come back stronger than ever. He is going to be the best runner the Appleton clan has produced, although his uncle Lance(legendary finishing kick) and his brother Bob make take umbrage at that bold assertion. I am looking forward one day of watching Tommy compete in the Wisconsin state high school championship. In the meantime lets both choose to interpret the momentary setback as another tool to get mentally tougher.
