Life of Robert Hall is an outstanding book about the life of this true Texas pioneer, soldier, and observer of Texas in its early years. Edited by Brazos, Hall penned his autobiography in later years and his life was definitely a fascinating and valuable one for the Republic and later the great Lone Star State. Born in South Carolina, in 1814, as a boy Hall and his family moved to Tennessee where he grew up and became close friends with legendary Davy Crockett.. He led an exciting young life and traveled up and down the Mississippi River delivering cargo and goods to famous ports along the river. After hearing about the brave Texans and their independence from Mexico Hall and some of his friends traveled to Texas but arrived to late to help with the Alamo and arrived in Texas shortly after the Battle of San Jacinto. He became a close friend to General Sam Houston and married into the prominent King family of Gonzales County. He became noted for his bravery, chivalry, and tenacity against friends and foe alike and wrote a fascinating account of his actions in the Mexican War. Halls account of such battles as Monterrey, and Buena Vista are a valuable history to those who want to know more about the battles of the Mexican War. He also participated as a Texas Ranger against the fierce Comanche Raids to were a common occurrence in Young Texas. His first hand accounts of expeditions such as the one that fought at Plum Creek are gritty and intense. He considered such men as good friends, Sam Houston, Ed Burleson, Paint Caldwell, Ben and Henry McCulloch, Big Foot Wallace and Jack Hays. Talk about knowing some interesting and famous men of Texas and U.S. History! Halls was against slavery and secession, and thought that Texas should of remained in the Union, though he came to fight and defend Texas in the 36th Texas Cavalry CSA. After the Civil War, Hall became a famous man throughout Texas and many came to hear his great stories and history of the early Republic and later U.S. state of Texas. He died in 1899 in Cotulla, Texas and is buried in Belmont, Texas. The original publication of this book published in 1898 is an extremely rare and valuable book. It is amazing that Robert Hall is not famous in Texas history. This brave soldier and leader became a prominent and valuable figure in the early years of Texas. He was a brave soldier and leader and many of Texass leaders came to rely on Hall in tough situations. He rescued women and children from the Comanches, fought bravely in the Mexican War and later the Civil War. He has a secure place in the pantheon of Texas heroes where he belongs. Hopefully, in time he will become more famous among historians, students, and classrooms that teach Texas history. This great biography of Robert Hall is highly recommended to anyone interested in U.S. and Texas history, Mexican War history, Indian War history, Confederate and Civil War history. A great read of a truly great man and leader of Texas!
