Lifeboat Involved in ‘Woman in the Harbour’ Drama A report that a police officer and a woman were in the sea at Cowes led to the launching of the local RNLI lifeboat yesterday evening. The woman, believed to be in her 30s, had gone into the water at the Cowes terminal of Red Funnel. A police officer who witnessed the incident immediately stripped off some clothing and dived into the sea. With the officer holding tightly to the woman, the pair began to be swept down the harbour by the strong ebb tide. He managed, however, to get her to the Island Sailing Club pontoon where the lifeboat crew sprang into emergency care action. Crew member Dr Will King, together with a surgeon colleague from St Mary’s Hospital, attended to the female who was unresponsive at the time. She was assessed, given oxygen, warmed and conveyed by stretcher to a waiting ambulance. The policeman, wrapped in blankets, was taken to the lifeboat station to recover from his heroic ducking.
