Lifted from "Planning" Magazine: Scottish government rules on wind farms near Cairngorms National Park By Catherine Early Monday, 17 June 2013 A wind farm on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park has been granted planning consent by the Scottish government while another larger wind project in the same area has been rejected. The 39MW Tom Nan Clach wind farm, in north-east Tomatin on the edge of the national park, was given the green light. The project had originally been refused by the Highland Council in 2010, citing concerns that it would damage views from the national park. The project was not opposed by the Cairngorms National Park Authority or Scottish Natural Heritage. Developer Infinergy lodged an appeal and a public inquiry took place in 2011. However, the Scottish government has also ruled that a 102MW, 34 turbine project at Glenkirk would have significant negative impact on the landscape, even after the scheme was reduced to 26 turbines. Finance secretary John Swinney said: "The significant adverse impacts of the proposed Glenkirk wind farm on nearby wild land and key landscape characteristics in conjunction with the cumulative effects with other wind farms and visual impacts on recreational and road users is too great."
