Like an armoire, broad, intricately carved That spoke of taste and class He got me home proud of his acquisition Beautiful and convenient. He opened me eager to fill me with himself. But with a flourish, tumbling Came I ecstatic for someone to open up to. In disbelief he walked away Annoyed that I was overflowing; not vacant And he emptied me alright With silence, with evasion, with sarcasm Telling me what I didn’t need He threw my shawl that was generations old Saying the colours were bizarre. Why didn’t I use a nail that stood out to pin Fiercely all that was me; I didn’t As those who made me engraved on me I was useless if I served no man. Orderly, closely packed with limited space Stagnant mossy air weighs on me. Locked in with things I can barely recognize I stand an ornament with a purpose.
