Like every parent of an addict, Brids said he faces a two-fold battle, saving his son, and saving face in a society that thinks drug-addicted kids are bad kids who have bad parents. The misconception is that the parents of addicts neglected their kids. There’s little discussion about the dangers of opiate addiction. “They have no idea how it happens,” Bill Brids said. “They just think it’s a bad kid. It’s all kids now.” Having traveled the journey of addiction, to the bottom and back, Dave Brids said he doesn’t have the solution of how to stop the escalation of heroin use. “I think the best thing you can really do is talk to your kids,” he said.
