Like everybody this morning, Im following the breaking news story - TopicsExpress

Like everybody this morning, Im following the breaking news story about the attack on a satirical magazine in Paris. And probably UNlike everyone else, Ive been monitoring the right wing news feeds. As expected, theyve already assessed the situation and concluded: • Gun control laws in France are the problem. If only the French were allowed to pack heat, this wouldnt have happened. • The whole of Islam itself is the problem, rather than Islamic extremism. • Obamas fault. • Gun laws SUCK, period. So I just Googled some stats. Firearm deaths per 100,000 in the United States: Total - 10.30 (2011) Homicide - 2.83 (2012) Suicide - 6.30 (2011) Unintentional - 0.30 (2011) ____________________________ Firearm deaths per 100,000 in France: Total - 3.01 (2009) Homicide - 0.22 (2009) Suicide - 2.33 (2009) Unintentional - 0.05 (2009) ____________________________ According to these figures, gun related deaths in France are less than one-third of what they are here, in the land where the NRA owns our government and where guns keep us safe. Do French gun control laws prevent EVERY gun related death? Of course not. But since our gun death rate is a fraction of what it is in France, clearly, the NRAs argument that an armed populace is a safer populace, is bogus.
