Like failure, influence is subtle. We would never allow someone to deliberately push us off the course we have set for ourselves. But if we are not careful we might inadvertently permit someone to nudge us in the wrong direction a little each day. They may be so effective at these nudges that we don’t even notice what is happening… until it is too late and the damage is done. We might even think the person who is doing the nudging is a friend. A nudge here, a nudge there, and as time passes, we soon find ourselves looking around and asking, “What am I doing here? This is not where I meant to be!” We wind up spending weeks or months or even years merely trying to return to the course we had thought we were on before our nudging friend came by, subtly destroying our future with the power of undue influence. There will be those who will say to you, Look, there he is, [or] Look, here he is. Do not go off, do not run in pursuit. For just as lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be [in his day]. - Luke 17:23-24 Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap.
