Like many, I remember 13 years ago like it way yesterday, but remember it differently. For me, it was a bittersweet day because during the chaos and heartbreak of that day, my son Patrick was born. From the moment he was born, he has known nothing but war and the fear of terrorism. He has waited in long lines at airport security and sent his father to deploy “over there” on three separate occasions. 9/11/2001 changed all of our lives, the way we think, the way we feel, and what we believe. Some say that day caused irreversible damage to this nation’s character. That the loss of life and of our innocence can never be overcome. Throughout our 238 years of history, we have faced and overcome countless moments that threatened our existence. We were born of Revolution and torn apart by Civil War. Two World Wars stretched us to our limit but allowed us to demonstrate, to the world, what we stood for. The Cold War put the entire human race on the edge of extinction, but we prevailed. I firmly believe we will emerge from the current era stronger than we ever have been and that this chapter in our history will be seen as another example of the character of America, a United people standing up for what was Right and Just. These are the times that try mens souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Thomas Pane, December 23, 1776
