Like many in the town we were shocked by the destruction caused by the fire in Fakenham Market Place on Sunday. The Aldiss family have a long connection with the area and own some of the properties affected, not least the former Aldiss department store. To see what remained of what was once a thriving business in a landmark building was sad indeed. The scale of the damage was clear for us all to see, but our thanks must go to the emergency services and agencies involved, as we are sure without their bravery, professionalism and dedication the situation could have been much worse. Many residents and customers have been kind enough to express their own feelings and have shared their memories of the stores with us, which has only reinforced our own view that sometimes buildings are more than simply bricks and mortar. As we are “the complete home furnishers” we have been in dialogue with the Community Foundation to identify how we can best support those displaced, whilst as property owners we are committed to working with local authorities, businesses and other community groups to help Fakenham recover from this devastating event.
