Like many of you, Im also deeply saddened by the sudden death of Robin Williams. He and his films touched our lives in so many ways including my own. Dead Poets Society opened my heart to poetry when in the midst of my grief after the deaths of my brother and mother twenty-five years ago (sacredartstudio.net/gifts-from-the-mother/). I was so inspired, I bought 19th c. American poet Walt Whitmans Leaves of Grass and my collection has grown over the years to include both classical and contemporary poets. I believe passionately in the power of poetry (and art) to touch the soul in our daily lives both in our joy and in our sorrow. Several years later, Williams characters words Carpe diem, Sieze the day. Make your life extraordinary inspired me to start my life anew here in Portland, with no job, no friends, no prospects except my soul calling to not live an unlived life. I was ready to write a new verse for my life. What is yours? From the film: We dont read and write poetry because its cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. Notes on the Art of Poetry by Dylan Thomas I could never have dreamt that there were such goings-on in the world between the covers of books, such sandstorms and ice blasts of words,,, such staggering peace, such enormous laughter, such and so many blinding bright lights,, , splashing all over the pages in a million bits and pieces all of which were words, words, words, and each of which were alive forever in its own delight and glory and oddity and light.
