Like many schools we have a dress code, and bare mid sections are not permitted. The girls at our school complain that we only dress code girls. I really dislike enforcing the dress code, but it part of my job, so I try to do it discretely and gently, and when I can, with humor. This past week a tiny 6th grade boy comes into class after lunch recess where he was out on the field playing some high spirited physical game. His shorts are pulled down a bit, and the bottom of his shirt up on his shoulders, hes cooling off his mid section. I call his name, raise my eyebrows and say If you are going to show off those really nice abs I am going to show off my flabs. Hes got a shocked look on his face as I start to un-tuck my shirt from my pants. Oh, no, no, thats OK he says with truly horrified look on his face as he quickly pulls his shirt back down. Lots of collective giggles follow.
