Like most personality disorders, NPD often develops during the mid-teen years, 15-17 frequently quitting high school before graduating. Most arent treated at this crucial time because it is difficult to determine if they have a disorder or if they are just crazy teenagers that will grow up. For this reason, diagnosis doesnt occur until age 18-24 if at all. Because of their inability to mature beyond their teen years, NPDs have difficulty planning for and forecasting the future. They never really mentally mature and they fear growing old which compounds matters. Malignant NPDs were often abused or neglected throughout their childhood. Like sociopaths their needs are centered around immediate gratification of basic needs. They literally seek to fulfill a Basic Instinct. Like sociopaths, Malignant narcs are chameleons in public. It doesnt matter what crowd theyre in, they assimilate with their environment. Its a self defense mechanism that keeps them from being detected for who they really are by appearing abnormal. If you know someone that fits in with any crowd, it doesnt mean theyre a narc but you definitely dont want to turn your back on them. Unfortunately, there is no cure for NPD and they will never change. When they appear to have changed, the reality is they have only learned to employ better methods of secrecy. They still do it, they just make sure you never find out about their poor conduct the same way twice.
