Like so many great teen movies, G.B.F. conforms to a familiar aesthetic in order to usher in the kind of ideas that dont normally get the time of day in mainstream cinema...By the time the film reaches its inevitable prom-night denouement, the politics of gay integrationism are an ever-present concern. This juxtaposition of fizzy posturing and genuine insight makes for a somewhat jarring viewing experience, and risks alienating two entirely different audiences at the same time. But it also places Steins film in a grand tradition of teen movies that have tackled societal ills by frothy means, from the toe-tapping civil rights microcosm of Hairspray to Sofia Coppolas consumerist cautionary tale The Bling Ring.
