Like some humanoids, some cats are sleepers. They need certain conditions in order for their big personalities to emerge. My cat Max was a sleeper. He arrived with Bruno when he was a sickly, skittish teenager frightened of people. He stayed under my bed for the first ten days of living with me. But when he realized the environment and the people in it welcomed him and loved him, he began to blossom into the little philosopher, cinephile, acrobat, and humanoid lover he is today. Since Bruno had always dominated him, he first had to change that. He did so by claiming me and my bed as his territory. He fought Bruno for space and pushed him off the bed. I remember watching their encounters for the first time: Bruno was astonished, not expecting Max to fight him. He sat blinking at Max, and then jumped off the bed. I figured they would get things sorted out between them, and they did. There is no longer a dominant cat in my household, because the Boys figured they would alternate. But Max still always sleeps by my head. I make room for Bruno.
