Like the Necronomicon, the Pnakotic Manuscripts are a frequent literary reference in the parody of gnosis present in Lovecrafts fiction which contain such secrets and power that reading them injures sanity. And they are wholly fictitious--existing only in Lovecrafts narrative and the literary multi/verse of his inheritors. And whereas other authors may have peppered their fiction with references to fantastic and cryptic imaginary books as well as pseudepigrapha to give their tales that mystical and esoteric aura, this is another technique anticipated in religion. We dont even have to search through esoterica. Right in the Bible are multiple references to literary works classified as non-extant, such as the Books of the Wars of Yahweh or Lamentations of the Singing Women. Some are thought to have once existed, but some, if not all, are perhaps wholly imagined.
