Like the rest of you, the week before christmas can be anything - TopicsExpress

Like the rest of you, the week before christmas can be anything but joyful. For you younger mothers out there, it does get better, yet more empty. I would advise that you enjoy the exhaustion you feel after laying the cookies and milk out for Santa. The holidays are a time of complete opposites. For example, one family sits by a fire that burns in the middle of a custom built house. This is the family that spends every winter skiing in Aspen, Colorado. This family hasn’t had money issues for so long that they have stopped appreciating how lucky they are. Everyone wonders where they get all of this money - humans are voyeristic when intrigued. The wealthy are indeed that. Many blocks away from the money, there is a family who also sit in front of a fire Christmas Eve. There are a few differences - just semantics, really - the biggest one being that this family’s fire arrises from a chared trash can. Instead of nicely seasoned wood, trash is the accelerant that provides them with warmth. Large cities send crews out into the money districts to make sure that there are no homeless people huddled in door jams or store fronts - out of sight, out of mind. All of the shelters are full and these people have no where to go, but what else is supposed to be done? As I walk the city streets at night, I notice that all of the church doors are closed, locked as tight as a drum. Perhaps even a secondary chain and lock are added to the handles that welcome for only a few hours a week. These churches become reclusive castles once business hours are over. Instead of allowing refuge, they remain dark, cold, and empty - just like the people that don’t try and offer a hand to those whom have their arms extended. Don’t make your life about net worth. Your self-worth needs to based on more than just items. A memory is more tenacious than any item composed of man made material. This should be all that matters. Ah, Christmas week. If you have little ones, enjoy these times. You really don’t realize how fast it does go by. Our toddlers are both fleeting and whimsical, and it is a beautiful thing to see. Lastly, I urge everyone to try and help those in need this holiday season. You would be surprised how far a little gesture will go. I will be posting today and tomorrow only. Let’s talk tomorrow, I will bring the coffee. -Ruth
