Like this editorial, I applaud the report of the Doelle-Lahey Commission and thank all those involved. Much work and attention to facts and process clearly went into its development. I also congratulate all those people who successfully persuaded the former government to recognize that before there was any further expansion of open pen salmon aquaculture, a rigorous set of standards needed to be put in place. One point from Commissioner Cohens report on the Sustainability of the Fraser River Sockeye that struck me was his determination that through all the science and testimony he heard it was clear that open pen salmon aquaculture had an impact on the wild salmon. What was unclear was the degree of that impact and he set out recommendations to have further scientific study conducted and ways to mitigate impact until that work was done by 2020. In Nova Scotias case the commissioners accepted a similar principle and set out standards to evaluate what is being done now and how this practice will be conducted in the future, if at all. I encourage the provincial government to consider these recommendations seriously and I will certainly be urging the federal Minister to do likewise.
