Likha (or Image) aka Tao Tao meaning Man Like c. 800-1200 CE South Cotabato Province, Philippines Provenance: Private Collection Springfield, Massachussetts H: 30 cm or 12 in. (larger than most extant examples) A tall and narrow ancient limestone sculpture called a Likha. Believed to represent an ancestral spirit. Figure standing with both arms wrapped around his belly.. His fingers are clasped together at the front. This was likely carved for the first anniversary of a chieftains death when the bones were washed and reburied in a ritual along with the Likha. This example is larger than the typical examples which are usually 9-10 tall. This one is 12 tall and in excellent condition with a nice old patina throughout. Reference: Casal, G., R. T. Jose, E. S. Casino. G. R. Ellis and W. G. Sondheim II (1981). The people and the art of the Philippines. Fowler Musuem, UCLA: Los Angeles.
