Lillie Hitchcock Coit was one of the more eccentric characters in the history of San Francisco, smoking cigars and wearing trousers long before it was socially acceptable for women to do so. She was an avid gambler and often dressed like a man in order to gamble in the males-only establishments that dotted North Beach. Adopted as a child by one of the citys volunteer fire departments, Lillie became a mascot and was considered an honorary firefighter all her life. On her death she left a large sum of money to San Francisco for the purpose of beautification and it was used to construct the beautiful Coit Tower on the peak of a prominent hill overlooking the bay in 1933. Because it is already at the peak of a high hill, the 210 foot high tower gives awesome views of the surrounding city and San Francisco Bay.
