Lilly Knows I know my darling Lilly Mae has had problems with men. As I am sure many of you will testify, there are few who have not. She has most certainly been abused in some way by men. When you adopt a dog, you adopt her problems, and Lilly Mae has brought hers with her to our home. Thomas, who grew up around German Shepherds and understands them, gets a pass from her...some of the time. Other times, she displays at him fiercely, only to settle down when he smiles and talks softly to her. Strangely, Perry has a harder time, though there is no gentler soul than him. Lilly is fearful of approaching Perry, but will walk civilly once I have handed her over to him on the leash. For me, she is all love, all cuddly and big sloppy kisses. Its odd though how Lilly reacts to strangers. We were walking the other night and met a man on the sidewalk, a complete stranger to her and me. He stopped and spoke to her, and instead of shying away, she hesitated, sniffed a moment, then licked his hand. He spoke to her kindly and she licked again, and he went on his way. How odd it is that dogs know so much about strangers--sniffing, listening, watching body language. They can tell a whole history in seconds and decide to avoid or trust. How handy it would be if humans were so discerning.--mamie van doren
