Lima climate summit extended as poor countries demand more from rich One interesting public comment added: There seems little understanding of the cost of not addressing climate change, or the impossibility of assessing its true impact or cost. We hear absurd arguments that climate change might be good for us, from those with virtually no grasp of the natural environment and how it sustains us. I have spent my whole life interested in the natural environment and the processes within it. I have formally studied it, and spoken at length to leading environmental scientists and scientific ecologists about it. I think Ive got a pretty good overview. But I wouldnt claim to know it all, or even a faction of what could be known. The simple facts is that climate change will be catastrophic for our economy and our civilization. The idea that our economy will somehow weather climate change, makes me shudder with the lack of insight, and knowledge that leads to this false belief. So much is taken for granted, and there is little understanding how our economy is reliant on the present and consistent climate. There is little understanding of just how little changes in climate will have massive effects on our economy. A relatively small proportion of the population is scientifically literate. A very small proportion of the scientifically literate have a good grasp of environmental science and scientific ecology. And a very small proportion of these have a fairly good overview. The reason climate change is not seen as an urgent and dire problem, is not because it isnt a massive problem. It is simply because of a lack of insight or knowledge. Political leaders and other intellectuals speak earnestly about financial matters, social matters, the economy, our progress, our civilization etc. These matters seem real and tangible to them. Whereas the natural environment seems a vague and nebulous concept to them. There is no understanding that all the things that seem tangible and real to them, and which they pay massive attention to, all rest on the natural environment, natural ecosystems, and a consistent and predictable climate, we have enjoyed whilst these things happened. In terms of our economy, our civilization, money, our way of life, everything, it all rests on the present and predictable climate, the natural environment, and natural ecosystems. We risk throwing everything we have away, and being returned to a new dark age. The dark age that followed the collapse of the Roman Empire, might be nothing compared to the dark age that will follow if we do not wake up to how reliant we are on the current climate, the natural environment, and natural ecosystems. I do not claim to have a crystal ball and know what will happen. However I am absolutely certain it will be very adverse, and no one else can predict the actual impact. If someone falls from a very great height, it is impossible to predict the exact injuries they will suffer. But we can be absolutely sure it isnt going to be good for them, even if they miraculously survive. If we were a truly rational species, education about how reliant we are on the current climate, the natural environment, and natural ecosystems would be paramount. I await the ignorant to denounce what I have said.
