Linda Stone, a consultant who has worked with the CEOs of both Apple and Microsoft, discovered that we hold our breath when we read email. She refers to it as email apnea. We also tend to hunch over when were sitting at our computers all day, which begins to permanently slump our posture AND decreases our lung capacity because were compressing our lungs. To combat these not-cool effects of being at your computer all day, try these tips: 1. Sit up straight as if youre trying to reach the top of your head to the ceiling. Drop your shoulders down (we often bring them up to our ears as we get stressed). 2. Inhale deeply, letting the air fill your belly, then exhale as if youre literally exhaling stress. Repeat this 5 times and remain conscious of your breath. 3. If possible, get up and stretch or take a quick walk every 20 mins. When you stretch, give particular attention to your hip flexors and hamstrings. These 2 body parts, if they remain tight, will wreak havoc on your lower back (your body is a huge interconnected machine - for better or worse). Try these 3 tips out if youre stuck at a computer all day for work or for school! Let me know if they help you :) Happy hump day, errybody!
