Linda and I decided to try out the Katy Trail for a ride, as did - TopicsExpress

Linda and I decided to try out the Katy Trail for a ride, as did several hundred other people today. The parking lot at Defiance, Mo. was full, so we drove a bit further and parked at the nicer trail head at Matson. We then rode nearly to Dutzow, stopping for a short break in Augusta on the way. A winery and brew house is right there trailside, but I didnt think it a good idea to drink while riding, (or any other exercise.) The fact that it wasnt even noon yet also played a part in that decision. If we had ridden all the way to Dutzow our trip would have been just under 30 miles, but since it was an out and back ride I told Linda we could turn around any time we chose to do so--and THAT would be our half-way point. So we were about a mile, maybe a little more short of making Dutzow, so we did more than 25, but not quite 30. The Katy Trail is paved with crushed limestone, so it is more of a drag on your bike when you ride it. It is noticeably not as easy as our paved Madison County trails, but it is not difficult at all...simply not as easy. As I mentioned, hundreds of people were enjoying this stretch of trail today. Ill post a few pictures of the trailside areas. Augusta is about 50 miles west of Collinsville, and is in the middle of Missouris wine country. Traffic on the local highways was heavy with winery visitors and fall color seekers. (And people heading to the trail.)
