Linda and I paid our respects to the grand old dame at 20th & Broadway, Oakland, during its last two days as a Sears store. For three generations before Sears bought it in 1996, it had been Emporium-Capwells. Built in 1925, the 400,000 sq.-ft. building has been dowdy for much too long for such a gorgeous property in such a high-potential location. Its coming reincarnation (as a sub-divided mixed-use Uptown Station) will certainly give this stretch of downtown Oakland one more big boost toward regional greatness. I hope.
