Line of Duty Death On January 20th, 2015 at approximately 1654 hours, Officers of the Olathe Police Department, members of the Olathe Fire Department and Johnson County Med-Act were dispatched to a medical call at an Olathe residence. Traffic Motor Officer Michael Kern suffered a fatal heart attack at his residence during the late afternoon hours while detailing his police motorcycle for an upcoming Presidential escort. Officer Kern was working day shift (0700-1700) and was preparing his motorcycle for the upcoming special assignment when he collapsed. Officer Kern has served Olathe for more than 13 years and had previously served three years with the Cass County, Missouri Sheriff’s Department. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and his son. The family and police department are requesting privacy during this time of mourning.
