After a successful national tour in 2012 and performances at festivals such as the National Arts Festival and STRAB (Mozambique), these two artists took a break and worked on their respective albums. Since then Luna has released “Storielied” and traveled to the Netherlands, while Gerald released his latest blues album and traveled to the Czech Republic to perform there. Luna and Gerald have now again joined forces to work on a new, improved version of their collaborative show and will be moving away slightly from the country and blues theme. They will be touring across country from September to October and will be performing at the White Mountain Folk Festival as well as Aardklop. In the new show they will be focusing on songs about love (in all its nitty gritty aspects). They will include more duets (covers and brand new originals) and will play with various genres of music. Some of the covers will include songs by artists such as Robert Plant, Allison Krauss, Johnny Cash, June Carter, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, Etta James, and Neil Young. Luna and Gerald both vowed to write and compose duets especially for the show which promise to be special. The concerts will feature predominantly new material in preparation for a recording by this quintet scheduled for November 2013. The line-up features Bokani Dyer (piano), Shane Cooper (bass), Claude Cozens (drums), Sisonke Xonti (tenor saxophone) and Mthunzi Mvubu (alto saxophone). Bio: Bokani Dyer was born in Gaborone, Botswana. An auspicious setting in retrospect, where many exiled musicians and artists from South Africa, including Bokanis father, musician Steve Dyer, were living in exile. Having musicians around in his early life gave Bokani the profound insight into the life of a musician and sparked a keen interest in pursuing music as a career. After taking up formal piano studies at age 14 for 4 years, he was accepted into the Jazz program at the University of Cape Town where he graduated in 2008 with an Honours degree in Performance and Composition with distinction. In 2009 Bokani won a scholarship for further study in the SAMRO endowment piano competition. He chose to spend 3 weeks in New York where he was tutored by Jason Moran. In 2011, Bokani Dyer was awarded the prestigious Standard Bank young Artist award for Jazz, bestowed upon visionary artists like Mark Fransman, Andile Yenana and Kesivan Naidoo in past years. Dyer has recorded two albums under his own name. His debut album, Mirrors was released in 2010, and provides a strong indication of the style and artistic trajectory Bokani continues to pursue. Emancipate the Story (2011), is a recording made possible by the Standard Bank as part of the jazz young artist award. In 2013, he was awarded first prize in the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship after competing in the annual competition. Critics comments: His is a strong, individual sound and an emblem of the rise of a new wave of contemporary South Africa jazz voices.(Evan Milton, Mail & Guardian) Compositions, playing, and the consistency of Dyers voice and vision make Emancipate The Story one of my top jazz albums of the year.(Gwen Ansell, Business Day). Critics have remarked on Dyers expressive style and skill which they say go beyond his years and are creative in a wide array of jazz idioms (Sunday Times) Video: youtube/watch?v=xpg8QNc9PUo youtube/watch?v=LQT0C2eDGB0 youtube/watch?v=ro4AJB2GI4M youtube/watch?v=4lSRCvWb26k Facebook Page: https://facebook/events/470926063022245 SETS AT 8:30PM AND 10:30PM _____________________________________________ Doors open at 7pm Sets at 8pm and 10pm on Wednesday and Thursday.
