LinkedIn just reminded me that its been EIGHT YEARS since I founded Spicy Horse Games here in Shanghai. To say its been a roller coaster ride would be a massive understatement. The studio has built every kind of content imaginable - PC Episodic, AAA Console, Casual Mobile, Multiplayer-online, F2P, and more... At one point we had as many as 85 people working under one roof here in Shanghai (and were managing another 65 outsource artists at the same time). Weve survived typhoons, crazy employees, having our power lines stolen, layoffs, near-bankruptcy, EA, all of China being knocked off the Internet, dust storms, invasion of the dead pigs, massive air pollution, a backstabbing co-founder, my crazy temperament, 3 studio moves, and more... Throughout it all Ive done everything I can to foster a development culture which places employee quality of life above all else. Weve been fortunate in attracting some truly amazing developers and delivering some really diverse products. 8 is a very lucky number in Chinese culture, so heres hoping Year 8 will bring a lot more fun and excitement to our crazy little company.
