Lions crumble again by Brendon Atwell 31 January 2014, 19:47 A destructive opening spell of bowling from the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras’ pair of Vernon Philander and Beuran Hendricks saw the bizhub Highveld Lions capitulate for just 102 all out in 17.1 overs in their RAM SLAM T20 Challenge match at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday. Live Scoring: Lions v Cobras The fast bowlers rattled the home side’s top-order by claiming five wickets in the space of 13 balls as the Lions collapsed to 18 for five after the Cobras had won the toss and elected to field first under some heavy cloud. Philander claimed 3-15 in three overs while Hendricks ended with figures of 3.1-0-13-3 and continued with his march at the top of the bowling rankings with 24 wickets this season. Only two players were able to move into double figures with the right-handed opening Quinton de Kock scoring 46 off 42 balls with five fours and a six while allrounder Chris Morris hit two boundaries and three maximums in his 31-ball knock of 41. The pair came together with score on 18 and added 53 runs for the sixth wicket before De Kock came charging down the track and was stumped by Dane Vilas off the bowling of Robin Peterson, who smashed the tail with figures of 4-0-20-3. The Lions lost Stephen Cook (six), well caught by a diving Aviwe Mgijima in the covers in the third over bowled by Philander. Rassie van der Dussen (nought) was then caught by Richard levi at first slip off the very next ball. Hendricks then trapped Neil McKenzie (nought) off the second ball of the following over and followed that up with another straight one that Temba Bavuma (nought) missed and crashed into his pads. Philander grabbed his third wicket in his next over when Dwaine Pretorius (two) became the third-straight LBW victim. The Lions’ heart-wrenching season continued with another inept performance with the bat but the bowling onslaught from the visitors has opened the door for the Cape side to really go for a bonus point, which would see them stretch their lead at the top of the log over the Sunfoil Dolphins.
