Lisa* came to a church in the Chicago-area with her four children, explaining that she thought she needed a power of attorney. Her husband, Luis,* had been diagnosed with a rare disease that causes rapid brain deterioration. His symptoms started with memory loss and quickly escalated. At age 41, Luis is now confined to a wheelchair with limited mental capacity. His long term prognosis is not good. The family of six have been barely surviving on Luis social security disability income of less than $1,000 a month since Luis can no longer work. In addition, their youngest, Alyssa,* a special needs daughter, requires therapy and constant care, preventing Lisa from working. The family really needed a guardianship.
