Sunday 23rd June - Kellehers Open Qualifier. Vice Captain scorches course to claim Albert Corcoran Memorial Trophy The Albert Corcoran Memorial Trophy was held over the weekend in varying weather. Saturday was a nice fresh day with plenty of run on the ball, whereas Sunday was dreary, misty and in general wet. This did not deter our competitors as the scoring was of the highest order as they competed for the much sought after Albert Corcoran Memorial Trophy. Martin O’Driscoll (12) continued his fine run of form collecting 3rd prize this week with a fine score of 38 points, claiming his prize on a count back from the unlucky Willie Henry and Martin Shanahan. The highlight of Martin’s round came at the 4th and 13th hole as he managed to birdie it not once but twice, safe to say he knows the right club to use there. The gross prize went to 2010 Captain Declan Glavin with 30 points gross. His super round of 42 points would win many a week, just not this week but the gross was a nice consolation. Declan finished his round in fine fashion with 7 straight pars, no mean feat in itself. Kevin Whelan (11) carded a serious score of 43 points, again a score worthy of winning any week and he can consider himself very unlucky. Mind you 43 points is a great score at any time and second place is a nice consolation so well done Kevin. Having 6 pars in the front nine Kevin duly birdied the 10th to come home in just one over par, fine golf indeed. Last but by no means least we get to the winner, Vice Captain Peter Whelan (17) who shot the lights out this weekend with an incredible score of 46 points!! Peter certainly had his putting boots on as the greens are seriously quick and tricky; something our course is famous for. Although Peter started poorly with a double bogey 6, he put that to the back of his mind as he scorched up the rest of the course. After adding 5 tidy pars to the card before the turn he had accumulated a fine front nine of 22 points. Hard to believe but he was to better that on the back nine as he added a further 7 pars to come home in just two over or 24 points, a serious return indeed. A 46 points total or 10 better than his handicap was a super performance and he becomes the worthy winner and gets the accolade of Albert Corcoran Trophy winner for 2013. Irish Mixed Foursomes: Lismore V West Waterford. On Saturday last our mixed foursomes team went to battle in Dungarvan against our neighbours from West Waterford. A strong team was assembled for battle and battle hard they sure did. In very windy conditions they put in a super performance as they claimed victory on a score line of 3½ to 1½. Despite trailing 1-0, we managed to secure 3 wins in quick succession. Pat Morrissey and Amanda Power sealed victory on the 16th green whilst Ted O’Leary and Nora O’Sullivan on 15 and John Whelan and Jo Jo Tobin on 14th both claimed great wins. This sealed the match and ensured a mouth watering battle in the semi finals against the hosts and firm favourites Dungarvan. Lismore V Dungarvan On Sunday morning the battle commenced at 9.40 in Dungarvan Golf Club against the host team, a difficult task but one that did not deter our team despite the miserable weather. Around the turn the advantage was just in favour of Dungarvan, but it was still very close and all to play for. Michael Burke and Fiona Howard played some stunning golf all weekend and claimed our first points on the 15th hole, claiming a very deserving 4&3 win. Dungarvan also claimed their first points at the same hole to level the match 1-1. Up ahead things were a lot tighter, but on the 17th hole Dungarvan moved 2-1 up with a fine win. Richard Ormonde and Lady Captain Joan Cahillane were 1 down playing 18 and in their typical fighting spirit they managed to win the 18th and force extra holes. On the 19th Lady Captain Joan kept her nerve and holed a lovely putt to claim victory and level the match at 2-2. All attention then returned to John Whelan and Jo Jo Tobin in the remaining match. Taking a one hole lead down the last we were hopeful of victory and it came down to a crucial 12 foot putt on the last. Dungarvan simply had to the hole it or they were out and in typical dramatic fashion, the Dungarvan lady held her nerve and dispatched the ball into the hole to force extra holes. Buoyed on by the crucial putt Dungarvan took command of the 19th hole to seal the win by the slenderest of margins. It was heart breaking for the Lismore team who gave it their all, sometimes sport and especially match play can be so cruel. Our Lismore team should all be very proud of their efforts all weekend as they represented the club in such a fine manner. Well done to all. Lady Captains Prize (Joan Cahillane) Next Saturday the ladies compete for the much sought after prize, the Lady Captains prize. Our Lady Captain Joan Cahillane deserves all our support and the men are asked to attend for some fun golf around 4pm which will be followed by the presentation of prizes at which point someone will be crowned winner of the Lady Captains Prize 2013. Best of luck to all who are playing and may we wish Lady Captain Joan all the best for a wonderful weekend. Belvedere Trophy Paddy O’Flynn and his troops welcomed Waterford Castle to Lismore last Monday night for the first leg of their second round match in the Belvedere Trophy. The weather on the night really spoiled the game as conditions were very trying in the wet and windy weather. Slick greens turned slow in places and wet tangling rough made it difficult to judge distance and pace. Craig Scotton and Michael Keane played some sublime golf to win their match on the 13th green, winning 6&5, to take us into a 1-0 lead. Waterford Castle however fought back with 3 fine victories but soon after Tom O’Donovan and Pat Lane closed out their match to narrow the margin. On the night the visiting team played some excellent golf and take a 3-2 lead back to Waterford Castle for the return leg on Monday 24th of June. The lads will be up against it but I’m sure Paddy and the boys will be up for the challenge. Jimmy Bruen Munster Finals Weekend 14th July in Bandon G.C. Ger and the lads have begun their preparations in earnest for Bandon. A few reconnaissance missions have already taken place with lads getting a chance to have a feel for the course. Whilst it is not the longest of courses, there is a lot of danger lurking on many holes so accuracy off the tee will be very important. We wish Ger and his panel of players all the best in their preparations and your support on the day would be greatly appreciated.
