Listen Up! "He who answers before listening—that is his folly and his shame." Proverbs 18:13 Most women I know love to talk. Did you know some experts believe that women use three times as many words as men do in a given day? Maybe that’s why women are so relational. At the heart of relationships is communication. The art of good communication lies in the ability to know when it’s time to speak and when it’s time to sit back and listen. There are moments in life when words are just not appropriate. When your best friend has just learned that she has cancer… when you or someone you know has lost a loved one in an unexpected way… these are times when words just don’t seem to fit. Your gentle presence and a listening ear speak volumes. Being a good listener is a beautiful character trait to possess. “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (James 1:19). When you take the time to truly listen to someone, putting aside all thoughts about your response, you will gain a very clear understanding of their life. You will be in a position to offer them the best possible help – a shoulder to lean on and someone to trust.
