Listen to this extraordinary performance of the second movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, as played by Helene Grimaud. She provides the music with an unfailing sense of forward momentum, while at the same time giving the theme a beautiful, overarching quality that I have rarely heard before. Her use of rubato is stunning, never sentimental or overdone. When she breaks forward with the motif at the movement’s conclusion, it sings with a heart wrenching purity and beauty, as the notes break forth with a clear, ringing tone. And you hear every one of the notes, including those that lesser pianists just slip by, without really articulating. Delicious! youtube/watch?v=W46JgM-K5SI
