Listening to Carol work with the boys individually with their homework this evening took me back to a class session in Old Testament Survey during my undergraduate days at Bob Jones University. Dr. Earl Nutz (pronounced long u) was teaching on characteristics of Old Testament kings in Israel and Judah when he paused and said something that was what I call a “branding iron” moment (something that will impact the rest of your life). “If you notice bad kings were often raised by bad/wicked mothers and good kings typically had good mothers. Remember this when it is time to choose your life’s mate. You will also be choosing your children’s mother. If you want to raise good children it is imperative that you chose a good wife who will be a good mother. Their mother will have a long lasting impact on their lives.” Fast forward 40 years later. We raised Josh and now are raising Colton and Kegan. I am very apprehensive of the world that awaits them, but yet the only thing I know to do is to teach them an intimacy with God, the lover of our souls, the Mighty God, the Prince of Peace, the God who is near and sees me wherever I go. With that ingrained truth they will be prepared to go wherever God calls. We have learned to cut up the boys’ Awana verses into daily chunks and do them as part of their homework so we go from spelling words, math facts to how Peter raised Tabitha from the dead. All natural parts of a world where God is the Center. All truth is His truth. May it give each of them a worldview to see everything else and to point their world to Jesus Christ. #reflectingontheimportanceofgoodmothers
