Listening to Lars question the voters of Oregon on likely returning Kitz to the governors office, I had this thought. I was a Republican for 40 years. Proudly so. In the days of McCall, Hatfield, Atiyeh, Paulus, Frohnmeyer, Myers and other such distinguished Republican public servants. None of whom would even be allowed in todays GOP. They wouldnt stand a chance in the primaries, and would be denigrated with the RINO term. But these are the type of people that were at one time the mainstream of the party. Oregon is dominated by Portland area voters, sherely because of numbers. Thats where a substantial portion of the elctorate lives. Urban voters tend to be moderate to slightly liberal. Until the GOP starts nominating people with positions that are closer to the urban voters, they have no chance of statewide election. But the party has become so hidebound, so dogmatic instead of pragmatic, that theres very little chance of that. In order to win a primary, you have to be far right. Give us a candidate thats acceptible to the majority of the voters, and youll have a chance. Until that time, you wont. Pretty simple.
