Listening to TUQs speech today, Im seized by a thought: Democracy? The Constitution? The sanctity of buildings and venues, like the Supreme Court, or the Presidency, or the houses of Parliament? Try telling the mother whose daughter was gang raped; who committed suicide yesterday after years of struggle to bring the rapists to justice...that a notion, or a book printed by a bunch of mandarins, or a building of stone masonry holds any importance, or is worthy of any respect, whatsoever. Try convincing the same, to a mother whose son has been murdered by killers who are known, but remain untouchable. To a father whose children have died of starvation, or malnutrition, or disease, or poverty. Try explaining these noble concepts to those whose loved ones have been killed in Model Town, or Waziristan, or Swat, or Quetta, or Karachi. Try telling that to victims of ethnic, or sectarian, or linguistic, or terrorism-derived violence. When I first entered PMA as a cadet a lifetime ago, one of the cardinal lessons taught was: Respect is always earned...it is never demanded, or commanded. A lesson that would well serve those seeking to use the Constitution (and their Machiavellian protection of it), to subvert - rather than safeguard - the rights of the people of Pakistan.
