Listening to the Word: God’s Favour or Man’s 2 Samuel 15:6, 25, 26 “Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the men of Israel…‘If I find favour in the Lords eyes, he will bring me back…let him do to me whatever seems good to him.’” Absalom sought honour and title out of pride and revenge against his father. David sought favour with God and recognized that all he had was a gift from God. While David’s lack of resistance to Absalom’s rebellion seems fatalistic, it was a deep recognition that God’s justice would ultimately prevail. David’s guilt over Uriah’s death perhaps kept him from seeking the death of Absalom or any others. David’s reliance was now on God. The legacy we leave for our children is either godly or not. Somehow David’s children did not embrace the same love for God that he lived with. They valued the wealth, position, honour and power that God had given David their father, but they failed to grasp the God from whom all these things came. Father, you are my source. May my children love you and not just what you provide.
