Listening to the Word: Sabbath Rest Exodus 14:13, 14 “…Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today…The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 16:23, 30 “Tomorrow is to be a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord…So the people rested on the seventh day.” It requires faith to rest from our work and trust God for his deliverance and his provision. Fear is the enemy of faith. Fear robs us of our peace and our trust that God will provide. The double provision of manna on the sixth day was God’s provision to carry his people through the Sabbath. The Red Sea parting was God’s deliverance from the Egyptians. In both provisions Israel was still and they rested. God delivered and provided. Israel rested in God’s promises and lived by faith in God’s word to them. Is God’s activity on my behalf more effective and life-giving than my efforts? Will I rest and look to God for provision and deliverance? Father, I trust your promises, your will and your way. You are my source; my Sabbath rest is found in you.
