Listening to the speeches of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Robert Kennedy and John F. Kennedy really makes me feel proud to be an American. Proud to see that these strong men stood up against the opposition and posed ideas that were not only uncomfortable to many but definitely cost all of these great men their lives. I could not imagine what our parents and parents friends had to deal with growing up in a time where hate was not just held but openly displayed. How far have we com I ask? I like to think that we as a society have made leaps and bounds and in some cases that is correct but we have not come far enough. Once again I plead with all that read this to feel comfortable having open conversations with those whom are different, those that hold different beliefs, different values, worship differently attracted to different. Then we will see REAL change, it takes more than just electing a Black man into our highest office to foster change and it is not fair for us to expect him to do it. It MUST start with us. It starts with empathy and truly trying to understand what it is like to walk a mile in others shoes. Then and only then will we start to become that great nation that many have and still do fight and die for...
