Literary Thought Experiment - The Sledgehammer of Tears (or, if you are more modern, The Mallet of Feels) What if you had to fight to the death in a battle where everyone was equipped with a sledgehammer? Gruesome, I know. The catch is this: the head of the hammer is composed of the material left after evaporating every tear ever wept on behalf of a literary character. Who would you pick? I, for my part, choose Oy. His may not be the heaviest hammer, but it would be the truest, most loyal, and honorable: I would soonest swing on behalf of all who ever shed a tear over that little fellow, knowing that while they might not have produced the most fearsome hammer in all of literature, they had produced the most noble. Pretty sick way to measure emotional involvement with fiction, but its the way that occurred to me the other night, and I thought I would share. Who would you pick? And please, do share why.
