Literature/librarian/historian friends: How far back does the trope of the special doorway that acts as a portal to another place/world go? (In case that was unclear, I mean things along the lines of the wardrobe in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the Keymaker in the Matrix, or the doorways from the Dark Tower series or House of Leaves, among many, many others -- I have about 8 other examples that have already sprung to mind, although they are from less well known works)
