Literature, music and the arts are all necessary for the development and flowering of a student to form an integrated total personality”, wrote Rabindranath Tagore. Exposing students to creative arts connects them with the fundamentals of education, be it the ability to imagine, conceptualize and represent ideas or the ability to interpret and create meaning out of ambiguity. Students were encouraged to have an in depth knowledge about tribal arts and their inspiration, by exploring Warli paintings. Students of Grade 7 created visual representations of narratives in the ‘Warli’ style and made a decorative product out of old bottles. They not only appreciated the commonalities and the differences between various forms of folk art such as Madhubani, Gond and Warli, but also understood that drawings could be used to depict their own life experiences.
