Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a rare and complex disease that can cause growths, such as non-cancerous tumors to grow in many parts of the body, including the brain, lungs, kidneys, heart, eyes and skin. What causes TSC? TSC is a genetic disease affecting around 1 to 2 million people worldwide. It is caused by changes or mutations in 1 of 2 genes, TSC 1 and TSC 2, which are thought to help control cell growth. When the function of these genes is affected, cells can grow uncontrolled to form lesions or growths. Although a genetic condition, TSC isnt always inherited. New changes and errors to genes can occur during development as an embryo.
