Little Red Devils - Commemoration of the 1st Canadian Division Centenary This past summer, the 1st Canadian Division Headquarters celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 1st Canadian Division. Established at the beginning of the First World War as Canada’s first fighting element of the conflict, the 1st Canadian Division now provides the Canadian Armed Forces with a rapidly deployable headquarters responsible for the command and control of joint and combined forces in response to a variety of crises, including humanitarian operations, globally or domestically. The 1st Canadian Division Headquarters flag mirrors the historic red patch colour of the Division and includes a stylized maple leaf in gold. The “old red patch”, as it is known, was worn for the first time during the First World War battle of the Somme. “The 1st Canadian Division earned a nickname from the Germans soldiers who called the wearers the little red devils attesting to their determination and skill during the Italian campaign. The red patch has long been a badge of honour for all members of the 1st Canadian Division and continues to be used today as a symbol of recognition.” - Major General Dean Milner, 1st Canadian Division Commander As we take time to #RememberThem this November, we will be bringing you from time to time some of the best stories from our archives, such as this one.
